Witch Hazel is a natural astringent. I will open pores with a warm washcloth and pop the puss out and then swipe on some witch hazel with a cotton pad. It dries and removes oil, but it's not too drying.

Steam your face. open up the pores and then place a mud mask on it, let the mud thoroughly dry, then rinse with warm/cold water. Cold will close your pores. Good luck.
To pop them, scrape a safety pin over the whitehead till it's punctured (it doesn't need to pierce very deeply) and squeeze the fluid out. Steaming your face over a pan of boiling water helps a lot as well.
