So microdermabrasion does help to minimize the 'appearance' of blackheads, yes. But only the appearance. It basically smooths the surface of the skin and knocks the tops of the blackheads. It does not go deep enough into each pore to acually get rid of them. The same goes for IPL (Intense Pulsed Light laser)
Basically if you're prone to blackheads there is no way to ever get rid of them permanetly or in one go. Even if you do manage to clear them up, it'll take time and they'll be back, so you have to accept you have them and then set about controlling them.
If you go to the dermatologist, s/he can prescribe you a Retin A product like Retnonva or something. This stuff is strong but amazing, it reduces blackheads, evens out skin tone and minimizes fine lines (older women use it combat wrinkles) However, you have to wear sunscreen, factor 30 as it's super strong and makes you vunerable to the sun.
But maybe before you go to those extremes, try good ole Sephora. The ingredient that best disolves blackheads is Salicylic Acid (link below). I would reccomend DDF's Glycolic 10% Exfoliating Control Gel (link below). And also Peter Thomas roth's Oxygen Detoxifying Masque.
I would also suggest that you try to get a facial every other month and have them 'extract' your blackheads properly. If you have thin skin be careful they don't damage the capilaries in your skin....then you have blackheads and blotchy skin! I would reccomend a good place like Bliss Spa. A woman recently told me that the Bliss oxygen facial helps to dislodge debris. Also, if you have an event then microdermabrasion is great to give you a nice quick radiance.
Also, the best thing to stop them returning is to change your diet! No matter what people say, research shows that diet DRAMATICALLY effects skin and in particular sebum production.
Foods the effect blood sugar levels are called Glycemic foods and they can have an impact on hormone production. Some say if you eat a lot of refined sugars and carbs you are more likely to have hormone imbalances and therefore balckheads/spots.
As a rule, try to cut down on sugar/corn syrup, salt, cheese, white flour products (i.e. processed foods) and any additives / preservatives. The best way to eat is think what people would have eaten a few hundred years ago (though we have loads more choice!!!), things like fresh fruit and veg, natural spices and flavourings and heaps of complex carbohydrates (quinoa, oats, whole weat pasta and bread and tortillas).
Eat loads of nuts (almonds, pecans, walnuts, BRAZIL) and leafy greens (kale, chard, cabbage, pak choy and broccoli) are a god-send to skin. Try to minimise alcohol and drug intake. Drink loads of water.
Obviously, enjoy your life but just keep in mind that diet helps skin...so maybe just remember to order the fish and veggie option instead of nachos with cheese.
Hope this helps !

Actually, a microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure in which the face is sprayed with abrasive crystals to remove dead epidermal cells...for instance, it is used to remove sun-damaged skin and to remove or lessen scars and dark spots on the skin.Does microdermabrasion clear up whiteheads/blackheads?
Yes. The way it works is very simple: by sucking away dead skin cells and debris, microderma also unclogs pores, thus diminishing black and whiteheads.
For me it worked very well.
Good luck.
